East Broad Top Railroad
The East Broad Top Railroad ( E.B.T.RR ) is a 3ft gauge railroad located in Huntington County, PA. The EBT was chartered in 1856 and did not start construction until 1872 after numerous delays and the outbreak of the American Civil War. Construction started in Mount Union, Pa and to save cost the railroad was built as a narrow gauge railroad. By 1873 construction reached Rockhill and a passenger depot, shops and roundhouse were built. In 1874 construction reached Robertsdale, Pa. The railroad ran for nearly 100 years before filing for abandonment in November 1955. The last common carrier train was pulled by EBT Engine #17 on April 6, 1956. On April 13, 1956 EBT #3 perfomered the very last switching duties in Mount Union. There after the railroad was bought by Kovalchick Salvage Company which is located in Indiana, Indiana County, Pa. The Kovalchick's decided not to scrap the EBT but left it mostly intact with the Timber Transfer, Coal Washing Plant, Water Tank, and a few other buildings being scrapped at Mount Union. Tourist operations started in 1960 and ceased in 2011. On Feb. 14, 2020 the railroad got a new life and was sold to a non-profit EBT Foundation. The Foundation has been busy bringing the EBT back to life. The original 5 miles of tourist line are opened and running. Work is moving South towards Robertsdale to open the line further to the South. The goal is to open the entire mainline from Shirelyburgs to at least Saltillo. The mainline north of Shirleysburg is owned by a different organization and is currently not for sale. For more history on the railroad you can go to the website below.
